How to achieve the optimal TRIOS 6 scan for Dx Plus
24/11/2025This article is relevant for Dx Plus users.
Introduction
Using the correct scan strategy ensures that data is sufficiently captured during scanning, to ensure accuracy of AI results of the four AI enabled indications as well as high-quality visualizations for proximal caries. The TRIOS 6 scan strategy for Dx Plus aims to and makes your scanning time efficient – avoiding rescans and lengthy workflows.
Prerequisites
- TRIOS 6 scanner and an active trial or subscription of Dx Plus
-
Scan quality overlay activated
- Overlay purpose: The overlay helps you determine whether the scan has reached optimal quality. Blue areas show where additional data is still needed.
- Overlay instructions: As you continue scanning, the blue overlay will clear from the occlusal, interproximal, and other tooth surfaces once sufficient data has been captured.
- Overlay activation: The overlay is enabled by default for all users and can be toggled on or off from the right-side panel.

- Familiarity with the TRIOS recommended scan strategy.

Tips for Better Quality for Dx Plus Scan
- Proper Lighting: Turn off external light from the dental chair to reduce reflections.
- Dry and clean scanning field: Excess saliva or moisture, blood, impression material, or other substances, may cause reflections can interfere with focus and clarity and interfere with final Dx Plus results.
- Reach posterior teeth: To capture the posterior teeth in the upper jaw, ask the patient to slightly close the mouth and relax the cheeks.
- Gingiva inclusion: Ensure the scan covers the interproximal areas, gingival margin, and adjacent gingiva for optimal diagnostic accuracy.
- Optimal Distance: Keep the scanner as close as possible to the tooth surface and maintain this distance consistently for best focus and image quality.
- Maintain a Steady Hand: Avoid sudden movements or jerks to prevent blurring and incomplete data capture.
- Slow pace: Move at a uniform slow pace; scanning too fast can cause loss of detail.
Deep Dive: Adaption to the TRIOS recommended scan strategy for best Proximal Caries results
To achieve ideal proximal caries visualization results, focus on the occlusal surfaces during scanning. For this specific case, make sure to follow these additional modified steps.
-
Scan Slowly Over Occlusal Region
Position the scanner parallel to the occlusal plane and move slowly to capture high-quality images. -
Maintain Correct Scanner Position
- For molars: Keep the scanner parallel to the occlusal surface.
- For premolars: Tilt slightly lingually to capture the full occlusal surface.
-
Keep the Scanner Close to Tooth Surface
This reduces distortion and improves image clarity. -
Monitor the Live Scanning View
Use the Live Scanning View to guide your occlusal coverage and scanner angle and refer to the 3D model to confirm that all areas are being captured.
Important: For proximal caries visualization, the system uses a single 2D occlusal images, so ensure each molar is captured fully and centrally in the occlusal view.
- Check Missing Tooth Notifications during scanning
- Ensure the scan quality overlay is enabled (icon on the right).
- Review notifications on the left for teeth needing more data. These notifications appear when you stop the scanner within the scanning process.
(See above notification when you stop scanning, while SW is processing)
(See above notification after processing, pointing out missing teeth)
(See above notification confirming enough data is captured)
- Resume scanning, focusing on the teeth that are highlighted in the missing tooth notification.
- Complete scanning and open the post processed proximal caries visualization in Dx Plus.
