Step-by-Step Guide to Proximal Caries Visualization
23/09/2025Introduction
This guide explains how to use the Proximal Caries view in Dx to visually assess potential proximal caries. This tool provides a 2D projection of the 3D scan, enabling dental professionals to identify darker lesions that may indicate proximal caries. It supports clinical decision-making by offering a clear visual reference, it does not include AI-based diagnostics.
Prerequisites
- Dx Plus subscription
- A compatible TRIOS scan
Steps
-
Launch Dx Plus
Open the Dx Plus software on your device.
-
Enable Proximal Caries View
In the AI assistive tools section in the left functions panel, select Proximal Caries.
3. Review the 2D Proximal Caries Visualization
The Proximal Caries view presents a postprocessed, non-interactive 2D occlusal projection of the 3D scan. Examine this visualization for darker areas that appear more distinct than the surrounding enamel. These areas may indicate proximal caries. The visibility and distinctness of enamel and dentin can vary depending on the tooth and its morphology.
4. Adjust Visualization Settings
Use the Contrast and Brightness sliders to refine the image. Increasing contrast enhances the distinction between light and dark areas, helping to sharpen lesion visibility. Adjusting brightness allows you to control the overall lightness or darkness of the image, which can improve clarity depending on the scan.
5. Follow the Assessment Guide
Refer to the on-screen instructions and clinical examples provided within the software to guide your interpretation. Proximal caries lesions typically appear darker and more distinct than non-caries areas or artifacts. Be cautious not to confuse diffuse shadows or reflections with actual lesions.
