Step-by-step Guide to Running Pathology detection Tools - Surface Caries
22/09/2025Introduction
This guide explains how to use the Surface Caries detection tool in Dx Plus. The tool uses AI to assist in detecting and visualizing surface caries directly on your scans. The AI analysis is based on visual patterns in the scan data and classifies findings according to the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). This supports objective diagnostics and enhances patient communication.
Prerequisites
- Dx Plus subscription
- A compatible TRIOS scan
- (optional) DentalHealth App for patient communication
Steps
-
Launch Dx Plus
Open the Dx Plus software on your device. -
Click Surface Caries Detection
In the AI assistive tools section, select Surface Caries.
3. View AI-generated results
The software highlights suspected caries areas directly on the 3D model using color-coded indicators:
- Orange: Caries (ICDAS 1–6)
- Yellow: Enamel (ICDAS 1–3)
4. Interpret surface caries stages
Use the following classification to interpret the findings:
Stage | ICDAS Code | Color Indicator | Description |
Caries | ICDAS 1-6 | Orange | All stages of caries, from initial enamel changes (white/brown spots, localized enamel breakdown) to advanced dentin involvement (dark shadows, cavities with exposed dentin). |
Enamel | ICDAS 1-3 | Yellow | Early enamel changes such as white or brown spot lesions without cavitation (ICDAS 1–2), and localized enamel breakdown limited to enamel (ICDAS 3). |
5. Document and share
Save the results for clinical documentation. Optionally, share findings with the patient via the DentalHealth App.
