Working with multi-device setup in your practice in Unite 24.1 and newer

18/08/2025

Easier connection between your PCs

With the latest updates of 3Shape Unite starting from version 24.1, we’ve made your daily operations more flexible and efficient by moving away from the traditional client-server setup. Now, every PC in your clinic or lab can act as a fully capable peer in your local network and within your 3Shape Account company. Also any device can be configured as a local storage imitating the server side if needed.

New way of data syncing between your devices

Data created by users within the same 3Shape Account company is now automatically synced across all devices (through cloud storage or locally), so workarounds like case export-import or sending via 3Shape Communicate between clinic devices are no needed. Any case can be made available locally on any device.

How to set up multiple devices

To ensure smooth usage of 3Shape Unite across several PCs, follow the steps below:

1. Install 3Shape Unite 24.1 or later

  • Make sure all devices you plan to use have Unite version 24.1 or newer installed.
  • When updating multiple devices, proceed one at a time.
  • Keep each device turned on and connected to the internet during the process to allow proper data sync.

2. Connect all PCs to the same local network

  • All devices must be on the same local network to recognize each other for a faster sync.

3. Log in with the same 3Shape Account company

  • The company account defines the shared environment of patient data, licenses, user management, and connections. Use the same 3Shape Account company on each device. This allows the devices to sync and connect automatically for sharing the same data and licenses.

Important note: avoid assigning the same 3Shape Account company to devices located in different physical locations. For each site (physical location), a separate 3Shape Account company must be created and used for your 3Shape software installations. Using the same account across multiple locations can lead to technical issues and could violate the terms and conditions you agreed to when logging into 3Shape Account (link).

4. Each PC becomes a sufficient peer

  • Each PC acts as a peer in the network. If you want a dedicated local server later, you can set that up optionally. The exception is a client-server setup where the former server will automatically become a local server.

     5. Storage setup: cloud-first, with an optional local storage

  • By default, cloud storage is used as the main source for your data storage and sync. However, for larger clinic or lab environments, we recommend designating at least one device with a sufficient local disk space to serve as the local storage.
  • For that in Unite go to More -> Settings-> Cloud and advanced storage-> Local storage -> enable Use this device as local storage.
