How to update 3Shape Unite
23/09/2025Installing updates in 3Shape Unite is essential for maintaining security, performance, and compatibility. Updates often include critical patches that protect against newly discovered vulnerabilities, as well as improvements that enhance functionality and fix bugs. Keeping your Unite and TRIOS software up to date ensures a smoother, safer, and more reliable user experience.
General process of installing Unite updates
Main place for Unite update installation is Unite Store on App updates page after getting notified about new update.
If you don’t see Store icon under More menu – it means you’re still on Dental Desktop (pre-Unite version) and you need to update to Unite 21.1 first. See this article on how to do it.
Once you’re in Unite you can start the update in several ways:
1. When you get a notification in left lower corner and a badge on Unite Store icon under More menu button.
When clicking on the notification, you will be automatically taken to Unite Store to continue with update installation.
In earlier versions on Unite this notification was shown when new update was detected and it had to be downloaded in the Store. Since Unite 24.1 the updates are downloaded on background and left-corner notification is only shown when the update is fully ready to be installed.
2. By manually checking for updates in the App updates page in the Store.
In older versions of Unite when clicking ‘Check for updates’ the page could be blocked by downloading new update. Since Unite 24.1 you can initiate checking for updates and exit the Store to continue working, as the update will be downloaded on the background and you will be notified when it's ready to be installed.
Once updates are downloaded, simply press ‘Install all updates’ button and let Unite finish the process.
In some cases during the update:
- (depending on your local system policies) you might get a pop-up requesting permission to allow the update to run. If prompted, press ‘Yes’.
- Unite might restart or ask you to perform additional steps (e.g. choose a backup folder).
Version-specific updates and additional update scenarios
While the process described above is valid for the most updates, there are some cases where the changes introduced in the updated version are quite significant and might require some actions from your side.
Below these types of updates are described in details.
- Update from Unite 21.1 to Unite 23.1
In Unite 23.1 we have introduced a mandatory sign in with a 3Shape Account, therefore after the update is completed, you will be asked to configure a 3Shape Company Account for your clinic or lab, and add Accounts for each dentist or other type of user.
- See this article on how to update to Unite 23.1 from earlier versions.
- Also check this section with relevant articles on how to get started with 3Shape Account and Unite 23.1.
- Update from Unite 23.1 to Unite 24.1
In Unite 24.1 we have introduced new cloud features - Cloud storage for instant sync of all your cases, files and patients between devices used under the same 3Shape Account Company, and Cloud license for enjoying the dongle-free access to all your licenses from any device.
- See this article on how to update to Unite 24.1 from earlier versions.

- Date-limited update notifications
Sometimes when shutting down Unite you can see an update notification saying that current version of Unite will be outdated on a specific date. This means that you are required to install the suggested update no later than the indicated date, as the new version contains important fixes or improvements.
Until the date is reached (the message is yellow), you can skip this message when shutting Unite down. However once the specified date comes (message turns red), you won't be able to shut down Unite until you go to Unite Store to install the update.
- Warning and blocking messages before the update
Sometimes when checking for updates in Unite Store you can see an additional message together with the update, and the type of this message determines if you are allowed to install the update or not.
Warning messages (yellow):
These messages do not block the possibility to install the update, but are meant to warn you about some important detail of the upcoming update which you should pay attention to before proceeding with update installation.
Examples of such messages (could be relevant or not, depending on your Unite version):
- Warning to check other devices in the clinic if they might have some incompatibility with the new update (e.g. incompatible Windows version)
- An early warning that Microsoft is ending support of certain Windows versions and owners of such devices should take care to update them.
Blocking messages (grey or red):
These messages prevent you from installing the update, as some incompatibility or other problem was detected. The ‘Install updates’ button will be disabled until the problem is resolved.
Examples of such messages (could be relevant or not, depending on your Unite version):
- Update blocked due to lack of admin rights - only Windows and Unite Account admins can perform update installation.
- Update blocked due to incompatible Windows version with the Unite version offered in the update - in this case you need to update your Windows version to a required one with the help of your IT staff.
