Creating a Backup During Dental System Installation or Upgrade

24/11/2023

When running the Dental System installer on an existing installation of the same version, or when upgrading to a newer version, a backup can be created before the installation or upgrade process continues.

Creating a Backup

Step 1: Close all Dental System applications.

Step 2: Run the Dental System installer.

Step 3: Select the preferred installation or upgrade method:

  • "Standard" – Creates a backup using the default settings.
  • "Custom" – Allows you to configure the backup settings before creating the backup.

Types of backup

The following backup types are available:

Full Backup

Includes:

  • Database
  • Settings
  • Material files
  • Library files

A Full Backup is always created during a "Standard" installation or upgrade.

Quick Backup

Includes:

  • Database
  • Settings
  • Material files

A Quick Backup can be selected during a "Custom" installation or upgrade.

Backup file location

By default, backup files are created in: C:\3Shape\Backup

When using a "Custom" installation or upgrade, you can specify a different backup location.

Files Created in the Backup Folder

The backup process creates the following files:

  • [backup file name].txt – Contains the backup date and time stamp.
  • [backup file name]_version.xml – Contains version information for the backed-up applications.
  • [backup file name].zip – Contains the backed-up data.

Important Information

Orders stored in the order directory are not included in the backup.

The default order directory is: C:\3Shape

If order data needs to be preserved, it must be backed up manually, for example by copying the orders to an external drive.
