How to enable Open Dental integration with Dental Desktop

07/11/2023

See here for directions regarding Unite instead.

Prerequisites for the integration:

  • Dental Desktop 1.7.18.x or newer.  Open Dental 20.5.50.x or newer.
  • Open Dental Client and Dental Desktop must be installed on the same computer.
  • Both standalone and client-server setups are supported (from Dental Desktop version 1.7.19.1).

3Shape TRIOS on Dental Desktop and Open Dental (PMS) integration provides automation of Patient Management in Dental Desktop from Open Dental (Create, merge, and update patient) and allows you to open TRIOS directly from the patient chart in Open Dental for faster and easier scanning.  Read more about Open Dental here.

How to enable the integration

  1. In 3Shape Dental Desktop, go to More > Settings > Practice Management Integration > Setup and click the checkbox next to "Enable" in the "Command Line Interface" section.
  2. Select General Command line as the integration type. If a confirmation dialogue appears, click Yes to allow DentalDesktopCmd.exe to make changes to your device.
  3. Enter valid credentials in the menu; use the same username and password as used for Dental Desktop. Test connection should be successful.
  4. You have now enabled the interface used for the integration in 3Shape Dental Desktop. You can proceed with enabling the integration in Open Dental software following the instructions available from Open Dental here.

Known limitations

  • Open Dental client and Dental Desktop must be installed on the same computer.
  • Both standalone and client-server setups are supported (from Dental Desktop version 1.7.19.1), but the integration currently does not support Dental Desktop server-client installation on TRIOS MOVE/MOVE+, as installing PMS client on TRIOS MOVE/MOVE+ is not supported.
  • Patient updates are only propagated from Open Dental to Dental Desktop. Not the other way around.

Contact 3Shape Support if you have further questions.
