How to perform a successful preparation

Instructions

1. Prepare the tooth.
   1. When preparing the tooth, make sure to perform a suitable axial and occlusal reduction for the planned restoration. It’s best to leave the chamfer slightly rounded.
      
2. Make sure to leave any internal angles rounded and leave a shoulder margin.    
            
3. Prepare the margin line.
   1. There are various ways of preparing the margin line; use the most suitable for the type of restoration and the patient’s situation:
      • Retraction paste
      • Soft tissue lasers
      • Retraction cords
      • Anatomic compression caps
      • Rubber dams
   2. You can use a hemostatic agent to prevent excessive bleeding in the margin line area. This will ensure better accuracy of the margin line scan. 
   3. When using the double cord technique:
      1. Place the first cord after applying the hemostatic agent.
             
         
         
          
4. Now prepare the tooth if necessary to ensure its smoothness and prevent undercuts that would influence the fit of the restoration. 
                    
5. Next, apply the second cord.
                    
6. Now have your patient bite on a compression cap. Remove it and dry the area
                    
7. Remove the cord and begin scanning. Make sure to scan before the gingiva collapses.  For better results, use the trim and lock tools.
