Optimizing the PC for best Dental System performance

06/11/2023

Using the tips, tricks, and setup recommendations below, you can optimize your PC setup for the best Dental System performance and help prevent certain issues or slowdowns in specific applications.

Hardware optimization suggestions

System/PC performance optimization suggestions:

  • Make sure the PC meets the system requirements in terms of hardware components and network speed.
  • Verify that the necessary ports are open in Windows Firewall and any antivirus software.
  • Configure the antivirus software so that it does not block or scan any Dental System applications, folders, or file types used by the system.
  • Make sure the latest Windows updates are installed.
  • Download and install the latest NVIDIA graphics card drivers.
  • Ensure that the following additional components are up to date: Visual Studio C++ Redistributable (2017 or later required), SlimDX, and .NET Framework (4.6.1 or later required).

Additional suggestions (if purchasing a PC not supplied by 3Shape):

  • Choose an SSD instead of an HDD to reduce system and software startup times.
  • Make sure you select the latest CPU and GPU generations.

Software optimization suggestions

  • Database location: Dental System supports both local and remote SQL database connections; however, the recommended setup is to install the database locally on the server for optimal performance.
  • Database size: Make sure your database is not filled with very old cases, as this may slow down Dental Manager performance. Enable automatic database cleanup in Dental System Control Panel > System Settings > System Cleanup > Automatically Delete Orders. Select both the Enabled and Keep files but delete from database check boxes to ensure that only the records are removed from the database while the order files are retained on your storage disk.
  • Materials file size: The material file is read every time Dental Manager is started or when an order form is opened. The more materials you have, the longer this process takes. Therefore, it is recommended to remove unused materials, especially smile libraries and implant systems.
  • Orders in 3Shape Communicate Inbox: The 3Shape Communicate Inbox is checked every time Dental Manager starts. If there are many unaccepted orders in the Inbox, this can slow down startup time. Make sure to accept orders in the Inbox as soon as possible, depending on the lab’s workflow.
  • Use of multiple dongles: In some systems, using multiple dongles has been found to increase read times (processed sequentially, especially when using three or more dongles) and may therefore cause system slowdowns (e.g., stalling of scan and design software). For this reason, we currently recommend using a single dongle containing all licenses. The reseller should contact subscription@3shape.com to assist with consolidating licenses onto one dongle.
