06/11/2023Refining intraoral scans with artifacts in Dental System
Some intraoral scans have artifacts such as holes, gaps and cracks, untrimmed scan edges, that create issues during the design.

The "Refine Scan" tool, available in the "Prepare Scan" step, offers a set of refinement options that can significantly improve the overall scan quality.

The problematic areas identified during the "Prepare Scan" step are indicated by flashing markers in different colors:

Identifying and correcting scan issues with refine options
You have the following refinement options available:
- Scan artifacts are isolated scan objects that are not attached to the main scan body. Select "Remove scan artifacts" by checking the appropriate box to remove scan artifacts smaller than 5 mm.
- Holes are areas where scan data is missing. The analysis function identifies these areas and recommends them for correction. Select the “Close holes” check box to enable this function.
- Select the “Improve scan” borders check box to enhance scan quality and help avoid potential issues in subsequent workflow steps.

Scan Type
Scan models can be refined for both impressions and existing teeth (natural or artificial). Select “Impression” option only when refining an impression.

Refine Scan options are available only for Digital Impression and Impression orders when the “Scan is unprepared” option is selected during scan import.
