Insufficient scan quality when scanning with a 3Shape lab scanner
09/11/2023Overview of unexpected scan quality
In some cases when scanning with a 3Shape lab scanner, scan result may turn out of not the expected quality, e.g:
- The scan may look distorted/layered;
- There may be holes in scans;
- Parts of the model are not scanned.
Affected scanner models and software versions: any model, any version.
Possible root causes
- Scanner hasn't been calibrated or correctly or not calibrated for a long time;
- The object is not scannable, or not properly prepared for scanning;
- PC doesn't meet the requirements or is not updated;
- Hardware malfunction of the scanner.
Possible solutions
- Make sure the PC meets the requirements, all latest updates for system and drivers are installed: check the latest PC catalog, that can be requested to your reseller, or Dental System User manual for more information about current system requirements. Also the article “PC requirements for scanning with ScanItDental in DS-2019 and above” and above for the requirements in the latest Dental System versions.
- Calibrate the scanner according to the requirements listed in the article “What to consider when calibrating Lab Scanners.”
- Check the calibration object for any visible defects;
- Listen for any loud or unusual sounds;
- Ensure the object is centered on the scan interface plate (the smaller the object, the more it should be placed into the center of the plate);
- Ensure the object is well secured on the scan interface plate or in the scanning fixture, to avoid it moving/shaking during scanning;
- Try scanning a different object;
- All reflective (metal, glossy plastic) parts should be sprayed with scan spray; if the object has translucent parts or very contrasting colors, scan spray may also be required - see more in this article.
- Make sure that the table where the scanner is located is stable and the scanner is in a stable position;
- Check the rubber and the scanner door to make sure there is no light coming into the scanner.
